Day School: Energy, Extractivism and Empire

Day School: Energy, Extractivism and Empire
On 18th May 2025, Workers in Palestine and WeSmellGas invite you to a day of learning and strategising against energy imperialism!
This day of workshops and discussions will bring together activists, artists, and organisers across housing justice, labour, climate, abolitionist and anti-colonial struggles to collectively unpack how energy systems fuel racial capitalism, militarism and colonial domination. We will explore how energy imperialism connects our movements - from Palestine to public housing.
Together, we will look at how energy systems shape global politics, intersect across our struggles, and how we can mobilise to resist them.
Why this matters for Palestine and workers
From the extraction of fossil fuels to the militarisation of borders, the energy system is a key tool in maintaining empire. In Palestine, energy is used as a weapon of genocide and settler-colonialism, where infrastructure is controlled, restricted, and stolen to entrench apartheid and domination. From gas fields off Gaza’s coast to the corporate capture of global supply chains, energy imperialism links the frontlines of struggle — and our response must be organised and collective.
Workers in Palestine understand that solidarity cannot be symbolic. To be meaningful, it must be grounded in the material systems that structure oppression — and that includes energy. The same companies and infrastructures that uphold Israel’s settler-colonialism in Palestine are entwined with austerity, climate collapse, and exploitation across the globe.
If we are to build a liberated future, we must understand how the energy system functions — and how to fight it.
